Unemployment
Just as any professional activity, cycling is also affected by unemployment.
For example, in 1981 the number of professional riders was about 500.

Universality
Road cycling has long been dominated by European countries. Among men, Greg LeMond was in 1983, the first non-European world champion. In 2000, the book edited by the French sports daily L’Equipe, 100 champions to a Century of Sport [19], established a ranking of 100 athletes of the century in any sport, which include Eddy Merckx, Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil Alfredo Binda and Bernard Hinault.
